This book approaches intertextuality in Roman poetry not from examples or case studies but from fundamental, and presumably determining, concepts like author, text, and reader. As for the terminology of intertextuality, I wait until the final chapter to make a proposal. Until then, I use the more or less standard ‘‘allusion’’ or some periphrasis. Each of the concepts just named is now unstable in the field of classics.
